Nipomo High School's 2008 production of West Side Story. Joe Ogren, age 16, as Tony. Erika Olson, age 14, as Maria. Andy Wilson, age 17, as Riff. Frank Soares, age 17, as Bernardo. Rachel Tietz, age 17, as Anita.
Here's what's so great about this video: there's an honest realization that the original Jerome Robbins choreography will honestly be too hard for this cast, but a solid team of creative folks looked at the strengths of the individual performers and created choreography that played to their strengths. What's best, the FOCUS is on the STORY. It's true "theater dance," and the choreographer & director should be commended! So many high schools forget to tell a story within dance. Bravo!
That was SOOO cute! The choreo is much different from the original but I think I actually liked this better! Except they left out when the Shark girls do their cool line thing :( but LOVED that everyone was paused when maria and tony first met. Overall, great job! My choir is doing this show this fall and I am playing maria so I hope the choreographer makes it kind of like this :)
I saw the original show 14 consecutive nights. It is startling to see something other than the original Jerome Robbins choreography and staging but the job here is just terrific! The work here is plainly showing, taking a group of young nonprofessionals and inspiring them to their best.
man they stopped the video rite wen i was getting into it
