This is a video of a German Shepherd resource guarding her owner from an Akita at the dog park. The GSD owner is interested in adopting the black Akita. Prior to the video, the Akita approached the owner and a quick snark occured between the GSD and the Akita. Watch how the Akita avoids conflict and the GSD constantly keeps the Akita away from the owner. This is a good example of how dogs can resource guard and go completely unnoticed by the untrained eye, until the snark!

No worries though, it has a happy ending.

  • How did u stop the conflict ? My ebt is having this problem with toys our anything in the house he lashes out on are collie

  • @Berto55535 The dogs now get along good, but my friend still needs to control toys and other resources with both of them. I make it a habit to have low level toys out and keep the high value items for special times and turn it into training. Email me at egilbert@kc.rr.com with more details please.

  • Unfortunately this type of thinking perpetuates the Akita myth and lack of socialization and appropriate breeding with Akitas. Check out my blog on this topic on my blog. Akitas or other type of breeds in this way leads to breed bands and undersocialized dogs.

  • No, my friend didn't do anything to make Grom that paranoid. He's much better now and he's good with dogs being around his mom. Careful what you ask for if you reinforce this behavior without a protection trainer and be sure to up your liability insurance. Be careful with protection training any dog.
