They came from homeless shelters, from soup kitchens, from part-time jobs. They came to be counted. More than 300 economically disadvantaged people visited the old YMCA building on Bergen Avenue in Jersey City Wednesday for an event designed to bring together the county's homeless population and the service providers that can help them. The annual event, known as the "point in time" homeless count, is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and similar events took place around the state on the same day. Due to blizzard conditions in the evening, however, some outreach groups that usually look for homeless people out on the street were unable to do their counts.
