The wife of the Chief of Secret Police Ngo Ninh Nhu gives a startling response to the Buddhist monks' self-immolations to protest the Diem government in 1963.

I hope those who think the flag of South Vietnam stands for freedom and democracy will actually learn the history. Why did Thich Quang Duc protest if freedom abounded in 1963? Government of South Vietnam was rarely democratic. Ngo Dinh Diem's government was a theocracy, only to be replaced by a succession of military juntas (General Minh, General Khanh, General Thieu) placed into the government by a series of coup d'etats.

I hope that you learn enough critcal thinking to realize the flags do not stand for government, but symbolically stand for the homeland that expatriates are proud of. Government will change, but the S-shaped country always live in our heart. We raise the flag to remember the homeland, not to endorse the government. Let us not be a people, of the same language and culture, to be divided by two flags.

I hope that you learn to be tolerant, an American value that make it unique. By alienating Vietnamese students, you have lost an important ally in your quest of democracy because you have shown your true color: anti-communism. If you stop being myopic, you should realize we students might also like democracy we encounter here and love to bring it home. If you stop viewing us with distrust, you will know we are not spies sent by government but humble students, rather lonely in a foreign land and so proud of homeland, and the flag is our expression (ask yourself, do you really think secret spies are stupid enough to wave flags to show their true allegiance and draw the ire of community?). Learn to be tolerant and show mutual respect. Yielding to old hatred will not benefit any one.

  • Important to understand that Diem's brother was archbishop of Vietnam. He wanted all of Vietnam to become a catholic country. The Buddhists were being imprisoned, monks not allowed to teach, many beaten or murdered. With the food embargo during the war, the government would only give out food to those who converted to catholicism. This immolation by Quang Duc was in protest against that.

  • Heartless bitch.

  • TQD was not self.........The video has shown a VC monk pure gasoline on him and started fire. Any one with eyes can tell it is a plot from the VC. Don't listen to VC and watch what they have done.

  • The truth always hurtful, that what she meant.

  • Tôi thấy tư cách của đám tâm thần Công giáo rất giống tú bà Maria Xuân: thích lấn ép người không đạo, ngu dốt, quê mùa mà cứ tưởng mình là "Tây", ăn nói chua ngoa, bóc phét như mấy con bán ổi.

In 1963, when her husband's butchers attacked the main Buddhist temple in Saigon, killing dozens of monks and imprisoned hundreds more, she said, "This is the happiest day of my life". She also offered to tighten the noose around her own father's neck because he criticized their dictatorship.

  • Absolute classic Madame Nhu
