I'm not sure what the purpose of this tug boat ramming the same stretch of ice over and over was, but i stood there for a half hour and they barely made a dent in the mass pile of ice on the river in Belleville. They burned up lots of diesel though so maybe its to stimulate the economy.

  • Its an ice breaking tug.. reinforced bow probably to half inch thick or more , the hull rides up on the ice using its weight to break chunks off..,great footage!!

  • They are clearing out the channel to prevent flooding at spring thaw. This tug was built specifically for this type of work.

  • A retired Coastie I used to work with has a story about running an ice breaker out on Lake Superior & how one morning he was relieved by the Commanding Master Chief who commented on how many zig zags the path he'd cut during the night. He claimed that the sunrise had caused the ice to shrink which mollified the man until his XSCPO had gotten to chow:Executive Senior Chief to the Bridge!" was passed & on arrival,he was told"Yer so full of sh**!"

  • Did it just epicfail?

  • Ice Breakers are made differently from regular tugs. The hull is made of 2"or better plate steel. High HP, and the weight of a moving boulder. Always fun to watch them work to keep waterways open.

  • Look at that little workhorse with its prop churning behind! Marvelous sound!

    Best regards
