I remember how proud the whole of NZ was when Lorraine Downes won the Crown. Looking back on it now, It still makes me feel fiercely proud.

what a classy show miss universe was before donald trump got his sleazy hands on it.

It was real and genuine, the girl weren't plastic bimbos like they are today,

And the ladies back then wanted more out of life than some lame ass modeling contract from trump. yes he cheapen it

I recall when Miss New Zealand won and she DESERVED to win, based on her comments, her overall marks better than that of Miss Ireland and Switzerland, well done Lorraine, you put NZ on the map that year, and she is one of the most stunning Miss Universe Ever, before Fake boobs and plastic surgery took over the MU and until Trump cheapened it..a sucky modelling contract..please Trump put more CLASS and less ASS in MU.

Ireland and Switzerland should have been Top 2, I guess MU always did and still does discriminate against the Europeans.

Miss NZ was hands down the best overall candidate and deserved to win the crown. She was feminine and graceful and also beautiful. USA, Switzerland and also Italy were strong. Italy should have been in the top 5 - very sweet. USA was attractive with a good figure but lacked femininity. Switzerland attractive but too much aware of it which detracted from her beauty. NZ was the best full stop. If you do not believe me have a look at her farewell walk in 1984 !!

I've been watching the Miss Universe Pageant without interruption since 1975 when Finland won in El Salvador where it was held. I remember back in 1983 watching this telecast I picked (and my mother did too) Miss New Zealand from the very start and low and behold we got it right, she won, yes it's true her teeth were crooked but she had this innocent beauty to her that ultimately made her bag the title and take it to her country New Zealand. In my opinion she is one of the prettiest winners ever

It brings back memories. Lorraine Downes is more beautiful now than when she won the title back in 1983. She went on in 2006 to win Dancing With The Stars in New Zealand, only ever Miss Universe to date to do so.
