Getting Real About Race: Complicating White Privilege.
There is no shortage of dialogue about white privilege among champions of educational equity. However, despite cascades of scholarship about white privilege and schooling, the popular discourse seems stuck in a state of arrested development. For example, critical education theories implore us to examine intersectionalities (like that between racial and economic inequity), but such explorations often are discouraged in white privilege conversations. In this session we will consider this and other ways the white privilege discourse sometimes fails to challenge the very perpetuation of white privilege. We also will discuss strategies for advancing this discourse by refusing to simplify it.
