New piano CD's available as of April,2008

This Stride piano solo Jim derived from the 1929 Fats Waller/ Eddie Condon classic studio recording. The tune was improvised at the session and was intended to be titled the "Harlem Fuss", while a slower blues tune was to be called the "Minor Drag". Somehow the titles were reversed and became immortalized as such. The studio assigned the job of "baby-sitting" Fats to Eddie Condon, insuring that Waller would not reach the session in the state of inebriation...this was like the blind leading the blind!!! Here Jim plays the standard intro and some of the horn and piano solos, then improvises the remaining choruses. This was filmed at Word of Mouth Studios in Algiers (New Orleans) on Dec. 18,2007.

  • Is most of this kind of jazz in sheet music?

  • Unfortunately not. It is the perfect challenge for ear training. Most of the more obscure pieces I learned first from piano rolls and original recordings.....I always try to find and learn the original recording by the composer and /or player; eventually over time the piece becomes "yours" as you learn to interpret in your own developing style. Be patient, STYLE was not built in a day.

  • Astounding.

  • EPIC

  • @CBasie2856 Beyond what jazznbear said: I looked for the sheet music of this on the net, and nobody seems to have transcribed it. People have transcribed most/all of Waller's solo piano work, but the original rec of Mior Drag was a band piece, so nobody bothered. Pity, I would pay good money to see Waller's solo on paper.

  • Piano rolls for sure.

  • Thanks, that was great. You must have some big muscles and a lot of energy to play that long in one go. What do you eat?

  • Fantastic!
