Ah, I can recognize myself there. I am from Bosnia and when my family emigrated to where we are now, we started sending money home almost right away!

Send home the slates does indeed mean "Send home the money". So many in Ireland emigrated to the USA to escape poverty. So many young Irish lads left Cobh harbour so seek a new life and indeed send home much needed money to support their families left behind in Ireland.

"I'll work hard to send home the slates" means: I'll work hard to send home the money / money bills, if I'm not very much mistaken. I think the word "slate" means money or money bill, but I'm not sure.
