Stop memorizing vocabulary. Start living in English.
An English language instructor at Simon Fraser University discusses why SFU's English Language and Culture program is unique.
The teacher, Jeff Behrner, explains that the emphasis on culture is key to SFU's English Language and Culture (ELC) program. In addition to English grammar and vocabulary, students learn to understand North American culture.
"Language is really linked to culture in a pretty fundamental way," Behrner says. "You can't really separate them."
ELC students participate in field trips in order to practice their English. "We really encourage students to get out and explore Vancouver on their own," he says.
He believes that students learn best in classes they enjoy, and his favourite part of teaching is helping and interacting with international students.
The "cultural exchange...is the most rewarding part of my job."
