It's game over for the News of the World. As the phone-hacking scandal comes to an explosive head, this punchy ABC Australia report offers a compelling insight into the saga of claim, counterclaim, costly settlement and political intrigue.

"The media, with their red-topped assassins, are the biggest beasts in the modern jungle". In a quiet pub in Dover, tabloid-hack-turned-publican Paul McMullan holds a phone in each hand and reveals just how stupidly simple it was to access the private phone messages of his prey. According to him, it's a practise that's been endemic to journalism in Britain since the late 90s. Yet when a 'News of the World' journalist was found to have paid a private investigator to leak information on the Royal family, Rupert Murdoch's executives claimed it was nothing more than one rogue journalist: "one bad apple!". In the inquiry that followed, Scotland Yard found the private investigator Glenn Mulcaire had targeted hundreds of prominent people, including a cabinet minister. Insiders claim Murdoch's political power has stalled the investigation thus far. Yet as the list grows and public outcry intensifies, can the News Corporation remain confident of weathering the storm?

  • Ask yourself why the Govt is acting so Quickly to CLOSE NOTW???/ Because they are afraid of what revelations will come to light on their own Crooked dealings. What a pity Politicians are not as quick to go once they have screwed up too

  • I was told by a guy in Dorking that the 63 year old man arrested was his neighbour a senior government Minister, but he wouldn't give his name. Anyone else from Surrey heard this ?

  • Fact: The media is controlled by big money and political parties, period! No longer do they just report the news or tell a story, they tow the line of their masters (power & big money). Look at Fox News USA, or right wing Talk Radio USA. Job one of the media these days is also to Dumb Down the people. And the internet, it swims with false info, like a million rats in sewer water! And the truth, whats that?

  • @Terramax Then you'd have to shoot everyone. EVERYONE loves triviality and gossip. EVERYONE.

  • People who buy newspapers like The Sun, The Mirror and The Daily Mail should be taken round the back and shot.

  • More clips like these!

    Merci

  • @Thepixieful There's a difference between exposing crimes commited by the ruling party of a global superpower after following a solid lead (Watergate), and arbitrarily invading people's private lives JUST IN CASE you might find a real scoop, and then printing their mundane sex and drug details in HUGE FONTS if you don't.
