Last Saturday, Sept 20, 2008 a close friend of mine, Drue Slack, passed away. He was only 28. I was heart broken to learn that he died as a result of a drug overdose. He had been wrestling with addiction and had been participating in treatment programs for some time. He was not the stereotypical drug addict at all. He had a wide circle of friends and interests. He actually helped others with their problems -including helping friends of his who were addicts with becoming clean. While he had issues with substance abuse, he wasn't defined by his addiction. He was a very compassionate individual who would help people selflessly, doing favors for, and lifting his friends without desiring anything in return. He inspired his friends to do better for themselves and to find strength. He was funny and a joy to be around. His death came as a shock to us. I'll never understand how someone who could be so genuinely good to his friends while failing so at caring for himself. -But then many of us are like that to a degree, caring for people we love while being neglectful of ourselves. He was a true friend, and helped many of us in more ways than he knew. Its indeed a shame that he had to leave us when he did. He is greatly missed.

  • Hi, Johnathan. That was such a moving tribute to your friend Drue. I know he heard you sing it to him. Thank you for sharing this video. I hope you're managing ok. My thoughts, and prayers are with you both.

  • Thank You, Singing Kid! Losing people is hard. It's always bad when young people die. Another friend of mine, an Iraq veteran, passed away this time last year. It's All Saint's Day and Day of the Dead today. I'll be having a glass of wine for my friends as I remember and pray for them.

  • Praying for you and your friend.

  • Thanks, Mike!

  • Oh i know, when i first got there i knew i would cry and was looking for some but couldnt find any. Ended up getting paper towels from the bathroom! lol. If you would like a new friend let me know and we could exchange contact info.

  • I was upset the whole week, and I was ok- but I really started to cry when we talked about him at the eulogy. I cried like a baby- but I looked around and saw everyone hugging and crying. We were in a lot of pain over Drue but we were united in supporting each other. I can always use a friend- I'll send my contact inf to you in an email on here.
