This has been going on since I first visited the Swiss paddle steamers in 1975 (I was a teenager then but was not inclined to join in. Although it is not allowed officially it still happens - most often on the Lake Leman. The lads also have been known to hang onto the structural beams under the aft sponsons until the vessel is underway then get washed out at high speed in the paddle wake - Boys will be boys!
