To anyone protesting this, let me point out that, 1. This elephant had killed 3 or 4 (I'm not sure) people in the circus where it had been, and when poisoning her to put her down failed, Edison stepped up, and 2. This was before elephants were endangered, so it was regarded as more tolerable than it would be now, even though elephant populations in both Africa and Southern Asia are experiencing an explosion as of late.

The story behind this was Edison trying to show that the competing alternating current was deadly, so he got the rights to perform the execution of an elephant that was condemned to death for killing humans, and killed it using Teslas AC.
