This is from "Symphonic Suite Yamato", composed and conducted by Hiroshi Miyagawa. Just google the title, you can find more information. The CD is still in available from some places.

Found myself whistling this on the way home from work today......I haven't seen Yamato for over 20 years ! ;,)
Still have it on VHS though, time to buy a player methinks :D

The track is made up of three parts -- the first overture, which is the initial track of the Yamato Season 2 BGM soundtrack. Then comes the ethereal voice, from season 1, though I think this particular arrangement was featured at the start of season 2. Then comes a piece of music that I don't remember hearing until season 3 -- it plays during the launch of the Yamato from its base in the Rockies.
