Medicare Health Care Providers ALERT!

Medicare providers with electronic prescription eligibility, will get hit with 1% MIPPA / eRx penalties if they did not comply by June 30, 2011

Medicare penalty and You Don't Even Know It!!!
The government, via a program called Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) gives bonuses and PENALTIES to eligible Medicare providers who write prescriptions. This is a 5 year Medicare incentives program that ends in 2013.
Orthotist, Prosthetist, Audiologist or Optician are exempt from the eRx penalty.
The good news is that you can receive a 1% bonus if you write 25 electronic prescriptions by the end of 2011. Normally the deadline for the incentives and penalties are the same. But, the 2012 penalty cut off deadline is June 30, 2011. Meaning, if you did not write 10 electronic prescriptions by June 30, 2011, subject to a 1 % penalty.
At this point, the best you can do is work on getting the 25 prescription, so you can earn the 1% bonus to offset the 1% penalty.
Another Deadline:
The HITECH Act requirement for Medicare and Medicaid physicians and hospital health care providers to implement and demonstrate meaningful use of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system by 2014. If you miss that date, there will be penalties as well.
