When Bob Fleming asked me to organize a choir to sing "Hymn to the Fallen", members of my church choir were planning a trip which included a visit to Omaha Beach in France. This video includes photographs of the hours we spent in that place which honors our fallen in France. Nearby is a village church with a special stained glass window dedicated to the paratroopers, one of whom landed on the roof of the church and played dead until he could be rescued. The music, written by John Williams, was part of the soundtrack for the movie "Saving Private Ryan". The drummer is the percussion section leader of the Marine Band at nearby Camp Pendleton, performing on an historic Marine drum. The performance was part of our annual Holiday Concert benefiting Meals on Wheels.
John Steele was the 82nd airbourne trooper from Alton Illinois whose parachute snagged on the steeple of the church in Ste. Mere Eglise in the early hours of D-Day morning.....shot in the foot, he played dead until rescued....he survived the war and lived into the 1990s....
