Foreigners enjoy a national holiday to help as volunteers in cities destroyed by earthquake and ensuing tsunami

BBC Brazil |

Thousands of Japanese and foreigners, including Brazilians, took advantage of the extended national holiday of spring - which started on April 29 and runs until Aug. 8 - to help as volunteers in the cities destroyed by the tsunami on 11 March.

The Brazilian José Rogério de Andrade, 40, known as Clown Lollipop, is one that took off from the food plant to bring a little joy to children and the elderly in shelters in Miyagi Prefecture.

"When I arrived and saw all this destruction I felt like crying and I thought about quitting," he told BBC Brazil. "It was the hardest job I've ever done," summed up the artist, who does the work of recreation for ten years.

But the bad feeling faded when he met the first group of children and the elderly. "They needed our warmth, and leave here with the feeling of having helped in some way. Now I want to teach people in other places to give more value to life," said Andrade, who is in the region until Thursday.

Aid

According to survey conducted by the Yomiuri newspaper, about 8,000 people a day were being expected in the coastal cities destroyed by the tsunami to help in cleaning the house, preparing food for the homeless, in recreational activities, among other services.

The Brazilian Afuso Michie, 43, also used the holiday to help the tsunami victims. She, who since the disaster on March 11 has collected and sent supplies to the homeless, decided to take the donations in person this time.

"We look at all the destruction and does not believe that nature was able to do everything, but what impresses me most is the strength of the Japanese people, who never gives up," he said. "When we can, we must help," he said.

Other groups also are assisting in the Brazilian city's cleanliness, food preparation and distribution of supplies. Maria Kuabara and four other Brazilians went to the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and spent the day cleaning the yard of a home, making for tons of rice were stored in a cooperative neighbor.

At night they would go to the provincial capital of Sendai, to meet with a group of Brazilians. "We brought ingredients to make pancakes and beans for distribution," said the Brazilian, who returns tomorrow (4) to his hometown of Nagoya. "Acting as a volunteer gives the feeling that we are actually helping in the reconstruction of Japan," he said.

Aqui tem um link contando a história dessa empreitada.Evitei colocar imagens tristes porque apesar de tudo que aconteceu eles não esqueceram de sorrir e ver a vida com otimismo. Grande lição de vida.
