The pope put children at the forefront of his general audience this week, in particular those who suffer from violence, abuse and disease. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Benedict XVI said the fight must continue until the whole world respects the dignity of its smallest citizens.

During his catechesis the pope reflected on the role of cathedrals, the most important artistic creations that came out of the Medieval period.

Benedict XVI
The two great architectural styles of the Middle Ages demonstrate how beauty is a powerful means to draw us closer to the Mystery of God.

The pope explained that Romanesque cathedrals are particular because of their solidness and their educational. Gothic cathedrals, on the other hand are much more luminous as they were intended to communicate the desire of finding God. PVB/RS
