My grandma had a small part in that movie

If you watch this movie and think it is about newspapers you are not really getting it, it a Cold War message, a warning. "Good news is no news" means no news is good news when the situation we thought we had well in hand is in fact spinning out of control. That is what this movie is about.

Kirk Douglas' best perfomance IMHO.

I agree. I loved it since the first time I saw and it's one of all my time favs. Anyway, I think that Wilder's The Lost Weekend is as good as Ace in the Hole. Ray Milland and Kirk Douglas they both made an excellent work.

These NYTimes reviews are way too short to do movies like this justice. This is arguably Billy WIlder's masterpiece, and deserves serious treatment from the Times.
