This is a common practice that helps to benefit animal welfare. She states that it helps to relieve the sickness of other ruminants and the surgery to have it done was standing with a local anesthetic. The cow did not even have to be put to sleep for it. It is used for multiple studies and a great tool in nutrition studies. The cow is only used for this purpose and lives a healthy life otherwise. Do a little research before you cuss and freak out, it isn't a big deal.
