Yes, we all think the paddle was so bad. Now we have kids out of control killing each other on the streets. Teen boys wearing their pants below their buttocks. Assaults on teachers and administrators happen everyday. Kids beating up their parents because the teenager has the upper hand.
No. That is not the way I want to live!!! You don't have to use that paddle very often at all. But when it is used word gets around quickly that bad behavior will not be tolerated. A paddle does have it's place.

@neugentk Such stuff has been going on since day one. Look at gangs back in the 20s, or for that matter in the outlaw gangs of the old west during the 1800s. Now days with all the information technology word gets around more so we hear more about all the bad stuff but that doesn't mean it didn't happen before. It just wasn't heard about as much before. Besides, if there is assaults on teachers, imagine how many more assaults there would be if the paddle was used, when students fight back.
