Barack Obama has been sworn in as US president for the second time in two days, because one word was given out of order during Tuesday's ceremony.

The Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, John Roberts, administered the oath again at the White House.

The decision to repeat the oath was taken out of an abundance of caution, an official said.

But Mr Obama joked: "We decided it was so much fun...." before adding: "We're going to do it very slowly."

In contrast to the first oath-taking, Mr Obama did not swear on a Bible and his wife Michelle was not at his side.

And instead of an audience of millions, only a few close aides saw the second attempt, with even journalists excluded from the Map Room of the White House.

Tuesday's stumble went largely unnoticed at the time.

In the oath, as set out in the US Constitution, the new incumbent swears to "faithfully execute the office of president of the United States".

But as Chief Justice Roberts read out the oath for Mr Obama to repeat, he moved the word "faithfully" to the end of the phrase.

Mr Obama, apparently noticing the error, hesitated. Mr Roberts repeated the phrase correctly, but Mr Obama went with the incorrect formula.

"We believe the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately," said White House counsel Greg Craig.

"Out of the abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."

Two other presidents, Calvin Coolidge and Chester Arthur, have had to repeat the oath because of similar problems.

And Chief Justice William Taft introduced a new word into the oath when he swore in President Herbert Hoover in 1929, promising to "preserve, maintain and defend the Constitution", instead of "preserve, protect and defend".

  • The moon god was worshipped by praying toward Mecca several times a day, making an annual pilgrimage or hajj to the Kabah in mecca which was a center for the worship of pagan dieties. Running around the Kabah seven times, kissing a black stone were pagan rites practiced by the Arabs long before Muhammad was born, and are still being performed by Muslims world wide today.

  • Far be it from me to go against the word of WikiAnswers, but Allah is just the Arabic word for God, it has nothing to do with pagans. Most of the Koran comes from the bible, including the Ten Commandments. The first building at the site of the Kaaba was built by Abraham. There are far more pagan influences in Catholicism than Islam - and I'm Catholic!

All of this is irrelevant because the first amendment of the US constitution says the United States shall have no state religion.

  • The Bible has some violent bits, Sodom and Gomorrah springs to mind - so much for love your enemies.

You know a lot of Christians over the years have been anti-Semitic and war like, that doesnt mean they dont believe in the God of Abraham.

The Koran, the Bible and the Torah all have the same roots. Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the same God. I'm sorry if you don't like that, but it's true.

  • In addition, the Muslims despise Jews, but the Christian Bible says that the Jews are the apple of God's eye and that whoever blesses her will be blessed and whoever curses her will be cursed. (Genesis 12:2-3) These are fundamental distinctions! The Muslim god and the Christian God are not the same.

  • Another important distinction is that throughout the Quran, the teachings are to destroy all others outside of Islam in the name of Allah. In comparison, the Christian God is a god of love. Jesus tells us in Luke 6:27-28: "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you and pray for them which despitefully use you."

  • President Obama was the President when he took the Oath the first time. The only reason they did it a second time was to silence any kooks and screwballs like Alex Jones who would have made a whole brand new Kook Conspiracy Theory out of a verbal guffaw. Heck you would be nervous and likely mess up too if you knew that 1/2 of the entire Earth/planet was watching you at that specific moment! Anyone who reads any more into this honest verbal mistake is likely a rubber-room candidate.

  • first week in office, and he has already proven himself to be status quo. OBAMA OBAMA! YES WE CAN! CHANGE HOPE BELIEVE!

  • What a complete load of rubbish, made up by ignorant racists.

  • From WikiAnswers: There are others however that would argue than no Allah is not the same God worshipped by Abraham, and Moses. There is archeological evidence that suggests that Islam is a modern version of anancient fertility moon god. "Allah" May come from All-li-lah a cheif pagan god, that was know to the people of the Arabian pennisula. This may explain the crecent as the symbol of Islam.

  • I'm not American and I'm not an atheist, I'm just pointing out facts and I should point out that God and Ten Commandments are not just part of the Christian faith. Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe in the God of Abraham and have the Ten Commandments as the foundation principles of their law.
