(Rochester, N.Y.) - The officer who was ambushed and shot in the back of the head Saturday is Anthony "Tony" DiPonzio.
He was investigating a report of drug activity on Dayton Street and was returning to his car when the single shot that hit him rang out.
Doctors removed the bullet in over two hours of surgery. Dr. Paul Maurer said the surgery went smoothly but the officer still has a long journey ahead.
DiPonzio is listed in guarded condition. He does, however, show some positive signs --he recognizes family's voices and can squeeze a hand and hold up fingers.
Police Chief David Moore said, "He's fighting for his life."
DiPonzio is a graduate of Aquinas Institute and SUNY Brockport.
DiPonzio's Parents Releast Statement
Tony and Joanne DiPonzio, parents of Anthony, released the following statement Monday:
"We would like to thank the entire greater Rochester community for the outpouring of love, support and prayers for our son, Anthony, during this very challenging and difficult time.
In particular, the presence and personal support of Mayor Duffy and Governor Paterson Saturday evening, and the assistance they provided in bringing members of our family home to be with Anthony, is deeply appreciated.
Obviously, we also extend our gratitude to the staff at Rochester General -- especially Dr. Paul Maurer -- for providing such outstanding care and compassion, not only to our son, but to our entire family.
"Finally, our love and thanks go out to all of the members of the law enforcement community, who have been with us every step of the way -- especially to the brave officers who saved Anthony's life by getting him to the hospital so quickly.
We ask that the community keep Anthony, and all of his fellow officers, in their prayers."
I don't know who Jeff is, is that someone who had a family member killed by RPD? Well I am not him, nor do I know him but I have a family member who is now retired law enforcement in Rochester NY and they are no better than the lowest of the low in the deepest of the South, when it comes to race relations and their jobs, so Bite me!!!!

FUCK THE POLICE, THEY GET AS GOOD AS THEY GIVE, CHECK THE NUMBERS, MORE COPS HAVE SHOT AT CIVILIANS THAN CIVILIANS HAVE SHOT AT COPS. THEY KNOW WHEN THEY TAKE THE JOB, THAT'S A PART OF IT. THEY MADE THE CHOICE!!!

@redcomic619 Shocking statements are rarely classy.. I can't argue with that.
The ways to get people thinking in person don't work with just text.. shock does.
In the hood Cops will pull you over without reason and rather then ask for license and registration they will do thing like put their gun to your head and ask if you've ever had a gun to your head. That's the RPD.

@abram730 I agree, but it's pretty classless to say it's a good thing someone was almost murdered.

@redcomic619 It isn't just me.
search "Anthony DiPonzio's Just Desserts"
I'm not from the burbs, but then I'm not out their like that any more.
My comment has nothing to do with being hard or not and there is always somebody tougher. But it's the only justice cops face for misconduct and sometimes it takes shocking statements to get people thinking. To snap them out of their patterned thought.
The RPD is a gang and thus over payed.

@abram730 You act like you're some hard ass by implying that justice prevails when a cop is shot in the brains, but you're probably some white kid from the suburbs.
