George Melies was an early 1900s filmmaker and the inventor of motion picture trick photography. This is a short documentary a friend and I did on his accomplishments as well as a how-to video on basic in-camera visual effects.

  • George is one of my fav film makers, I was estatic about him in the past, and Ive just rediscovered him

    This is sad but true.

In 1923 George melies was evicted from his flat that was owned by the film company he usd to work at.

He was so mad, he dug a hole in the ground and burnt all his 500 original films, this is why nowerdays we only have a small amount of those films left, that have been copyed. Its so sad, I wish sometimes I could go back into the past and tell george not to do it :(

  • yea, it's a shame how underappreciated he was in his time. Seems to happen alot throughout history

I love Hugo, just the history behind it, I love it for the History and the Mechanical side of it...

  • He did NOT die unappreciated. His work was rediscovered and was recognized by the French film academy and awarded a Legion of Honor distinction. The movie "Hugo" brings this up.

  • Fantastic documentary, but there's one thing that bugs me. The Lumiere brothers didn't invent the motion picture camera, Louis Le Prince did.

  • They used stop edits in Scott pilgrim when the people burst into coins

  • you guys are so creative! Good work!

  • @cinedependent

That's not how his own daughter pronounces, for instance. I don't speak french, but I once saw a documentary and the french people pronounced the S all the time. If someone can explain, I'd appreciate it.

  • Good work!

  • georges melies is very inspiring

  • Hi there, hughs from Buenos aires.
