ACTING UP - RUSSIA'S CIVIL SOCIETY - Portraits by Platon for Human Rights Watch -
Artemy Troitsky, 56, was a rock critic in the latter days of the Soviet Union whose book, "Back in the USSR," described the country's burgeoning, semi-underground music scene. Once a columnist, magazine editor, and television commentator, Troitsky is now mostly kept off the airwaves, except for a couple of online TV shows. "If there was no Internet, I really don't know what we all would do," he says. Troitsky is currently being sued by a Kremlin aide for calling him a "trained poodle." He predicts that if Putin takes back the presidency in 2012, many of Russia's brightest and best will emigrate.
