  • You can find usually in bushes hiding on branches (look closely: they obviously blend in incredibly well) or even on the side of your house. They're never very obvious but because they can be quite large (five inches long) they're not hard to shoot if you have a good lens. They're particularly active in autumn.

  • I think that's already been done. It was in one of those bad, 1930s Flash Gordon space adventure films.

  • After watching numerous Japanese monster movies, the answer is an unequivocal "yes!" That is, if you define "significantly-sized" as Wembley Stadium-ish. Painful? You bet. And the incantations they scream as they bite you (they are praying, after all) just add insult to injury. As for your final question, this critter had a barbecue fork in its mitts (we were cooking out) but I hear they're more likely to wield corn skewers- you know, for those hard-to-reach places. Thanks for clicking!

  • Very nice ! It is a male of Tenodera aridifolia sinensis. Where did you film it ?

    Greetings , Bernd

  • Hello and thanks for clicking! I don't know what it is but I'm glad you told me! It was in my back yard in central Illinois in September. He stayed for two days then went away. But a week later, a young one appeared on our porch (cute, if that word can be used). That one also disappeared a couple of days later. We've since moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where videotaping will be much better. More to come!

  • where can you find these mantis in your yard

  • how do you know this? you sound like an arrogant nerd touting off your useless knowledge.

  • nice bug! i'd like to see could that thing take on one of those 30cm centipedes.

  • Question: always wondered, but can a significantly-sized mantis bite a human? Is it painful? What about its praying-utensils? Just curious. ~Sean
