Clair Goldsmith, CIO for the University of Texas at Brownsville and Paul Caskey presented this primer (Parts 1 through 6) on the topic of federated identity management for representatives of a variety of state education networks serving community anchor institutions. The presentation occurred November 1, 2010 at the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting in Atlanta, GA.

General Overview:
With the success of federated identity as a paradigm and as expanding infrastructure, the importance and extent of the landscape of Identity Management are growing rapidly. Development of core open source platforms for institutional and interinstitutional authentication and authorization have made Shibboleth and SAML global standards for federated identity. Identity management (IdM) has become central across the higher education environment and a considerable part of the current work is to engage and transfer knowledge. The role of IdM for elementary and secondary education is significant for a number of reasons. Access to services and resources offered over networks to support and enhance teaching and learning can become much more seamless for the end user and much less costly for school districts.
