Life After Stroke Awards 2008: Volunteer Award

The Stroke Association has approximately 3,500 volunteers working throughout the UK. Their work is crucial, supporting the provision of a wide range of community services. This award has been established in recognition of this invaluable contribution, and is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated great dedication and compassion.

WINNER: PHILLIP WILLIAMS
Phillip has been a volunteer with The Stroke Association for nearly three years. He volunteers at a Long Term Stroke Support Group, The Community Integration Programme and the Communication Support Group in Bridgend three times a week.

Phillip had a major stroke himself six years ago which left him in a wheelchair. His stroke was so severe he was told that he would never walk again. With his innate strength of character and grit, he persevered with learning to walk again and also started to volunteer.

Not only does Phillip volunteer three times a week at groups, he also visits stroke patients in hospital and inspires them to keep going. Phillip has joined the Patient and Public Involvement Group in Bridgend and keeps stroke on the agenda. He has also attended the Welsh Assembly Government to champion the stroke cause.

Phillip is a loyal and committed volunteer who never fails to give 100 per cent to others. With his naturally calm and caring manner, Phillip has become an inspirational role model for those who are still battling in their recovery from stroke.
