It is entirely possible that this was made to be run on a water supply furnished by a stationary engine powered pump.

I have the patent for this fan- #565,772, issued August 11, 1896 to W. J. Mingle and T. Bemis of Specialty Manufacturing Co. of Indianapolis, Indiana, entitled "Water Motor Fan". These weren't the first water powered portable fans, but the first of this type.

Fantastic fan. I have had that very same model. I even owned an even rarer "double sided" water fan with blades on either side. It is now in the Fan Museum in Kansas run by the AFCA Antique Fan Collectors Association. Cheers, Mike
