er, he was talking in a sarcastic tone - he was playing to the views of the characters from the time. I really can't believe that people take that as a serious comment.
Tom Baker was one of the most sarcastic Doctors - he always found a way to play to the weaknesses and expectations of other characters with a straight face and his toothy grin behind it.
