bit of history for you- in '83 thames tv did the bill's pilot ''woodentop'' featuring PC jim carvers first day on the beat being shown the ropes by then (wpc ackland) in it a PC hollis is mentioned in 1984 september i think ''the bill'' was born with ''funny old business cops and robbers, and Reg appeared i dont know in that episode but certainly in the first series....

Yeah - he's been at Sun Hill since the start >(although at first he was the voice on the other end of the radio I think) Not that I've been watching it that long - only a couple of years. However my Auntie used to work in TV and she worked on The Bill at one point. Can't remember what exactly she did - production seceratry maybe.

and reg has been there since '84 so yes he ios the longest serving charector currently in it... june as you know left last year ( sad )-(...and PC stamp - appeared as an extra in the first two series, but not as a copper by the 3rd and last series of the 1hr original episodes tony had established himself as a pc dealing with a little girl who had lost her tortoise, lol - then in '88 they went to the 30 min episodes... the first 3 series are avaliable on DVD, - history class dismissed! - lol
