Bahr Idriss Abu Garda, is the first Sudan Darfur rebel leader to stand before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Abu Garda is the commander of the United Resistance Front (URF), and is charged with war crimes over the killing of 12 African Union peacekeepers at the Haskanita AU camp in September 2007. But Garda denies involvement in the attack and thanked the court for making arrangements for his appearance. [Bahr Idriss Abu Garda, Commander, United Resistance Front]: "I am not guilty of all charges, but it is very important for any honest leader to come and to face justice." Instead, he is appealing to all the Sudanese accused of crimes in Darfur, including president Bashir, to face justice. [Bahr Idriss Abu Garda, Commander, United Resistance Front]: "We are struggling in Darfur because there is no justice in Sudan, justice should be implemented to everybody, whether it is Abu Garda or President Omar Al Bashir, everybody." Abu Garda also called on the international community to pressure the Sudanese government to allow humanitarian aid back into Darfur. Judge Tarfusser said the court will hold a hearing on Oct. 12th to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to place Abu Garda on trial. According to the United Nations, the war in Sudan has caused up to 300 thousands deaths and the displacement of over two-and-a-half million people.
