This is my very basic acoustic guitar version of the 1946 song A Gal in Calico. The song was written by Arthur Schwartz and Leo Robin for the movie The Time, the Place and the Girl, but is probably best remembered for the versions sung by Johnny Mercer and Tex Beneke. In the 1970s Manhattan Transfer also recorded a version which, once upon a time, used to get a lot of airplay on UK radio--which is where I first heard it. My version here is a kind of folksy camp fire rendition and uses the following chords: D D7, Em7 and A7. For the slideshow I've chosen a few photographs of one of my favourite 1940s movie stars, the very lovely Jeanne Crain. If indeed I was lucky enough to be working with the rodeo in 1946 Santa Fe, she'd be exactly the kind of gal I'd like to meet.
