Wow you do so much to start the wicd manager why not just type in
start-network
or
service wicd start
and then type.
airmon-ng
for the interface and write it down for your wicd manger in preferences for the wireless interface name. After that restart your backtrack and then see if that works. best of luck. make sure you have a compatible wifi dongle if your using vm or a wifi card if your booting off of it on ur pc. wifi dongels are not expensive if you want to buy one thats compatible.
