yes it's free flight, they are towlined, in the towline the are like kites, the pilot have to find a thermal to get the glider in it with the towline, when the thermal is finded and the glider is in it, the pilot pulls the towline and the glider is relased in the thermal, and the clock start clicking , the glider now is free flight, the glider try to fly in the thermal for 3 minutes or 5 minutes ( depends of the championchip regulation) until the thermalizer stop the flying.

what kind of planes are these? does not look like free flight? looks like they are tow-line / kites kind of planes??
