Fall of Communism

Late at night on January 19, 1990, 26.000 Soviet troops stormed Baku. They acted pursuant to a state of emergency declared by the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium, signed by President Gorbachev and disclosed to the Azerbaijani public only after many citizens lay wounded or dead in the streets, hospitals and morgues of Baku.

More than 130 people died from wounds received that night and during subsequent violent confrontations and incidents that lasted in February; the majority of these were civilians killed by Soviet soldiers. More than 700 civilians were wounded. Hundreds of people were detained, only a handful of whom were put on trial for alleged criminal offenses. Civil liberties were severely curtailed.

The behavior of Soviet armed forces in Baku must be judged in the context of their actual mission. Mikhail Gorbachev's use of force in Baku was nothing but the desperate attempt to stop dissolution of Communist ruling in Azerbaijan. The Soviet army was trying to rescue the totalitarian regime, the rule of Communist Party and Soviet empire.

In April 27, 1995, Mikhail Gorbachev apologized for Black January in a speech in Istanbul. "Proclaiming the state of emergency in Baku and sending army to the city was the biggest mistake of my political life..."

Being born and raised in the Soviet Union, believe me when I say that "communism" is not an ideology that preaches death and carnage. I am from Azerbaijan and as you can see in this video, we paid a big price for our independence. But none of us can blame the ideology of communism. Read the "Communist Manifesto" and "Tsarist Russia" and you reach the conclusion that the responsibility lies with the Russian leadership.

Its was mostly because of Chernobyl, a bankrupt economy, corruption on every level, a extremely out of date military, lack of human rights, and the fact that most people were just so sick of waiting hours in line for everything. Blaming Gorbachev is like blaming the boy who found a dead dog, not the person who did it. :)

guys one thing is for certain...there is a thin line between national socialism (HITLER) and communism (LENIN) . they where both vicious and aggressive tyrans and each one of them used their parties as a backup...lenin wasn't a real communist..he torchired and killed millions of people in gulags while he lived in riches and glory...the USSR was a fraud...the only true communist state was Lenin's Russia...you can also read about the things that happen in North Korea and you will see what i mean

So...when do they not notice the 100+ million caused by USA? Vietnam, Bay of pigs, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Israel (mass-murdering monster), Middle-East, China...

And the list goes on and on and on.

USA refuses to believe that it's done wrong. If a country believes that it's perfect, is it not just as bad as Nazi germany, believing that all others are inferior?

@vidsmadeofwin That just doesn't work. There is a thing called constitution etc. Sure, in Communist systems, the legislative can decide against the constitution, but didn't they do that in the Weimar Republic as well? The cause that Stalin got power was just that nobody was there to protect the constitutional rules.
