funny thing is, that John Glenn wasn't the first American in space, it was Alan B. Shepard Jr.

@ thepayne0; true, but this isn't the 50th anniversarry of Shepard's mission; and Glenn is still alive today to enjoy the milestone.

This soooooo amazing. To sit on top a rocket full of fuel on fire, in a tiny tin can, thrown into space with no guarantee of returning, and with less technology and computer technology than my smartphone. Crazy..........BRAVE but...crazy.

you have to be an American to be an Astronaut Russians are Cosmonauts and commies so my comment is not invalid. I already know most of this stuff about the first men who flew but it was those Russian Commies who were trying to beat us if they can launch Sputnik they can make one that has a nuke,if they can put a man in space we will beat them, and if they try orbiting the earth we will keep orbiting until their record is broken. The Russians lost the race we landed first.

@usafvet100: There is film of one of the most horrific Atlas explosions at the end of the movie Koyannisqatsi (representing the Hopi Indian proverb of burning ashes falling from the sky). The camera follows the burning debris down until all that is left is the Atlas' center engine burning and spinning down.

Glenn was first American to orbit the earth. Yuri Gagarin was first man in space-orbited once and Alan Shepard flew a sub-orbital mission (up and down) three weeks later. Gus Grissom flew a second sub-orbital July 21, 1961 and then Gherman Titov flew for 17 orbits on August 6, 1961.

Their rockets were blowing more often sometimes then the US ones, there's a story (which I don't really beleave) about a Cosmonaut who died in one.

Yeah, but Glenn was the first in orbit, not that it really matters.
