We found two of these strange things on the beach on Saint Simon's Island, Georgia, USA along the Atlantic Ocean.

They were pink and seemed somewhat translucent with a look similar to raw chicken or raw fish. From a distance we thought the first was just a bagel or donut, as it was around that size. The second was a little bit larger. The one which we flipped over was perfectly smooth on the bottom with no distinct markings. They were somewhat squishy, like rubber or soft plastic.

So what the heck are these?

  • I just returned from another trip down there, and found another one of these. Luckily, I just talked talked to someone who had a smart family member who could probably identify it. The verdict is..... a sea sponge, possibly Chondrilla Nucula. A little bit of checking Google images on that leaves me convinced that the source knows their stuff. They are also known as chicken-liver sponges, which fits well with the impression that several of us had that they look like raw chicken.
