@frithar The rules that Palin had to adhere to were that he would travel only by land & water, no airplanes. His film & sound crew were not allowed to accompany him across the Arabian peninsula so he rented a car & was allowed to travel w/one of the crew. The rest of the crew were permitted to fly from Jeddah to Dubai.

I can;t help but think that driving a car for so much isn;t quite in the spirit of Jules Verne...Did I miss where that complication was explained?

I do believe that the part where they travel on the dhow is my favourite so far. Exciting, romantic, and exotic with just enough modernity to relate it. I wish I were born again as an explorer.
