This video was created by a group of four Deaf people who meet at the Hearing Impairment Unit at Bury Library.

Its aim is to highlight the real problems faced by Deaf people accessing the Emergency Services and to offer a simple yet effective solution.

  • Look up 'EmergencySMS' in Google.

Emergency Text Service for Deaf people and Speech Impaired people in the UK ... you can text to 999 but you MUST register first. Full info and video clips on web site.

  • 4 years ago and things still haven't improved :(

  • Your a low Priority Mate Tell Them You see

a Police Officer(one of there own) been beaten up by a group of thugs I gaurantee you will have a superfast response lol its a terrible world espesially if your vunerable with a disability:) Best Of Luck

  • O.K. here's a response I got from Greater Manchester Police - go to geocities . com/pjcroad (remove the space before and after the dot)

  • There isn't such a service, unfortunately (yet) - see geocities*com/pjcroad (replace the * with .

  • yes agree with that why not set a regester list for all Deaf people who use text only calls then that way it would be better to know

  • this is a good idea but you always have the problem with hoax calls/ texts. real pain in the arse

    police constable, essex

  • Last year on March 6th 2006 I had a fire at my flat due to leaving a chip pan on when realised that had a fire i didnt know wot do so just dailed 999 on me mob phone and couldnt hear wot they were saying i just repeated wot i was sayin until me neigbour came took over the mob phone and the same happened in 2003 when one off me neigbours flat was on fire at 7.15am i had to find someone to take over on the moblie phone as i would like to see the 999 text service happen in Greater Manchester area.

  • do they not have a videophone service (for videomobiles), or an emergency email (most current phones can send texts to email addresses)? isn't there such a thing as an operator who can read texts and pass them on verbally? not ideal solutions, i admit, but useful as potential workarounds...

  • Yes please if you could find out that would be good. I have just been in contact with my regional Police Service and all they have is a minicom number, no SMS text service. I am aware of a pilot scheme which has been running in Liverpool and an SMS text service is available in Northern Ireland but as of yet I have seen nothing else. So any information you have will help.
