Earlier this year, President Obama set a hefty challenge ahead for car manufacturers - make vehicles 30 percent cleaner by 2016.
The goal is to reduce carbon emissions many scientists say are creating a global warming effect which could have major consequences.
But many such calls for change are based on models of global warming that some Oak Ridge scientsts say may not be as certain as previously thought.
Scientists at Oak Ridge National Lab published their research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal last week.
In it, they show that the temperatures the earth may face in 50 years could be a lot hotter, or not as hot, as other scientists have predicted.
