Puszta - Movement 1

This suite has been written in 1987, and consists of 4 separate dances which don't have any thematic correlation with each other. the "Puszta" is a vast prairie in Hungary where gipsies used to move around with their (wild) horses. The alternation of 'temperamental' and 'melancholic' themes and moods is typical for the gipsy music as are the tempo changings. The instrumentation is very bright and colourful, bringing all sections of the symphonic wind band to the fore.

  • i play flute and i'm from minnesota and we're playing this song at my high school.

  • my orchestra just picked this up, and i swear noone has ever heard balkan music before. they play it like an austrian march and it sounds like garbage

  • @DscT501 except for the second movement, which is the worst instrument for this piece. I played this on tuba in tri-county band my junior year of high school and one rehearsal the director decided to rehearse the second movement over and over. The tubas had maybe 2 bars of music in that movement so we excused ourselves to go to the bathroom, found a cozy spot backstage, and napped

  • Love this... played on clarinet freshman year of high school. Probably favorite played in all 4 years!

  • Sounds so much like Rikudim...playing this song for UIL this spring...gotta love it!

  • saunice

  • @mrcookiemonsterr im also from minnesota!

  • my highschool band is playing this tonight, with 4 tubas

the tuba is what makes this song magical

and ima rock it on the top line

  • @coolfoolroolz Yeah Minnesota! I'm form there too! :P

  • @coolfoolroolz played there last year...absolutely one of the greatest experiences of my life also, even though we didn't play this song...but we will be :)
