Renzo PIANO & Richard ROGERS - (1977) - The Georges POMPIDOU Center (Paris, France)

The National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou [http://www.centrepompidou.fr/], known as Beaubourg, is the result of an international competition in 1971, won by Renzo Piano [http://www.rpbw.com/] and Richard Rogers [http://www.rrp.co.uk/rshp_home] with the engineering support of Ove Arup [http://www.arup.com/]. Beaubourg is located in the heart of Paris in the Marais district. The size of the work, more than 100,000 square meters, and the ambitious program required the presence of exhibition spaces for contemporary art, multipurpose rooms for music, library, large storage areas, have been resolved with a form strikingly at odds with the historical buildings of Paris. The need for highly flexible spaces to accommodate different artistic events led to the adoption of five large floors completely free, 50 meters deep and 170 long. To support these plates has adopted a metal frame left completely exposed to the same pipeline facilities. In this way, the cultural center takes the image of a purely technological machine but, in reality, all components are manufactured and assembled by hand. The relationship with the environment is solved through the creation of public spaces of fundamental importance: the square outside the Pompidou Centre has identified one of the liveliest parts of Paris, crossed by 25,000 visitors day of the museum. The escalators located on the main façade, the roof terraces and the Restaurant GEORGES, designed by Dominique Jacob and Brendan McFarlane, provide unprecedented views of the city, building a direct relationship between the city and museum machine.

  • I've often wondered why I'm drawn to your videos time and time again, and I think it is because you take your viewer on an intricate journey of your own appreciation for fine lines and curves, in the same manner as a novelist does through his/her skillfull choice of words, with the discovery that one has suddenly arrived at the center of a masterpiece. A truly enjoyable experience every single time.

  • @Rx4pabulum

I'm grateful for the attention paid to date and the moral support you give me!!!!

I thank you for sharing with me these travel notes in the world of Architecture!!

  • @violetparme

You're lucky to be able to enjoy whenever you want!

I come to Paris once a year and I didn't miss a visit to this awesome place of culture..

Thank you for giving me a moment of your precious time, I'm grateful! Ciao da Napoli

  • What I like about that place is that it looks so temporary.I often surprise myself thinking "well, enjoy it today,it may be gone next time you are in this area!"I must admit, I prefer being inside than outside .Great variety of exhibitions;you always have sthg going on to suit your taste.I also like the slanted "piazza" in front of it(often crowded) which seems to want to lead just everybody towards Culture, even if some people will never get into it. Thanks! Cheers from Paris!

  • @bbbbmer
