The 2011 Walk of Honour plaque will be unveiled in a special ceremony next week.
The Walk of Honour award winner, announced as part of the Australia Day
ceremony, recognises the contribution Bill Kerr has made to the Wagga Wagga
community.
"The Baylis Street Walk of Honour was instigated in 1998 to recognise substantial contributors to the City of Wagga Wagga," explained Mayor Wayne Geale.
"Bill's contribution to the community was through his acting abilities, the arts and his famous tag line "The Boy from Wagga Wagga".
"Bill spent his first twenty years in Wagga Wagga developing his skills as an actor in musical theatre, revues and eisteddfods and working on local radio.
"After serving in World War II Bill Kerr went to England to further his acting career
and worked for BBC Radio where, through his affectionate mockery, Wagga Wagga became famous throughout Britain."
Bill then went on to star in many blockbuster British movies through the 1950's and 60's such as 'Appointment in London' (1952) and 'The Dam Busters' (1954) and 'Dr Who' (1967). He returned to Australia in 1979 and became a leading figure in the Australian film renaissance of the 1980's, with key roles in 'Gallipoli' (1981), 'The Year of Living Dangerously' (1982), 'Dusty' (1983) and 'Razorback' (1984).
"Although he now lives in Perth, Bill Kerr's successes have been significantly tied to Wagga Wagga, whose reputation has been promoted, enriched and delighted both within Australia and internationally," Mayor Geale added.
"Bill Kerr will be the 27th inductee in the Walk of Honour and will join the other
individuals who have already been honoured with the installation of metal plaques along the pavement of Baylis Street."
Mayor of Wagga Wagga, Cr Wayne Geale, will unveil the 2011 Walk of Honour
plaque at 2:30pm on Tuesday, 17 May.
How wonderful to hear from Bill Kerr and how wonderful to hear him sounding so well. Brought a happy tear to my eye.
