A total of 55 students were formally enrolled at the International American University College of Medicine (IAU) last Friday during its 15th White Coat ceremony which was held at the Kimatri Hotel.
The momentous occasion saw the students being draped in their white coats and stethoscopes creating quite a spectacle. During the ceremony they read the Hippocratic oath which outlined what is expected of them as physicians in training. It reads in part: "I publicly acknowledge and accept the privilege and responsibilities as a physician in training and dedicate myself to provide care to those who need."
In his brief welcome, remarks Dean of Basic Sciences Dr. Jayant Mohite described the event as a landmark one. "It is a landmark event in your professional journey. This journey is very long and hard" he said.
He told the students that IAU will equip them with the necessary tools for a successful career, adding that they have made the right choice.
Minister of Health, Dr. Keith Mondesir in his inspiring remarks called upon the students to make good use of their opportunity to become physicians. He impressed upon them the importance of being able to analyse and diagnose.
"You have taken on a profession that is challenging. It requires management and analogy. Before you see a patient you may have to recall four or five chapters of your medical books before you analyse and diagnose," Dr. Mondesir explained.
He added that one will think that since all physicians use the same books they all possess the same knowledge, but this is not so. He said some physicians are good at analysing while others are good at recalling.
"Medicine is no joke. Medicine is a profession which requires dedication. You have to study very hard to succeed." Dr. Mondesir said.
He took the opportunity to outline some of his ministries plans for the south as it relates to health. According to him his ministry is now looking at the possibility of putting a dialysis machine in the south since 40% of people who require dialysis come from that part of the island. This he said the school can benefit from.
Dr. Olusina Adsanya impressed upon the students to take their work very seriously adding that the journey ahead is a very challenging one. He stressed the need for them to be consistent in their exams.
Dr. Allan J Wabrek, executive dean emphasised the important role the parents of IAU have played in assisting them (students) pursuing their dreams.
"Frankly, if it was not for their support some of you would not be here today. Their support may be emotional, psychological or financial, "he said.
According to Mr. Sibi Gopalakrishnan, Public Relations Officer to IAU the school has made enormous progress since it began its operation here in 2004. Students from all over the world have showed interest in our medical program.
"This semester students from 33 states in the United States, Canada and the rest of the world have enrolled with us. As the year progresses we expect this number to increase," Sibi said.
Diedra Joseph, a senior student, and Kristina Cancro a first semester student all spoke about the school in glowing terms. They emphasised the need to be disciplined, focused and determined to succeed in the program.
The school awarded two students for academic excellence in their exams. Asford Khan received an impressive mark of 99 percentile in Biochemistry and James Stewart 99 percentile in USMLE Step 2.
They were all showered with praises by professors of IAU for their feat.
