Indian PM pledges 500 mln USD fund to Afghanistan

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on regional stability, fighting extremism and the India-Afghanistan strategic partnership during his two-day visit to Afghanistan.
Singh said he strongly supports the country's effort to reconcile with the Taliban and said Afghanistan can depend on India's backing.He pledged additional 500 million U.S. dollars to the war-torn Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Karzai insisted that international forces would do more to prevent civilian casualties even as the US and other NATO countries plan to start decreasing forces.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "The recent events culminating in the death of Osama bin Laden do create a new situation, and I sincerely hope that all countries of this region - Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, would recognize that this is a unique moment in the history of this region. Thereby we all should agree to work united to end this scourge of terrorism."
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said, "The international community will continue to stay in Afghanistan and will continue to be active in Afghanistan. The only change that I'm seeking as the Afghan President on behalf of the Afghan people is for them to recognize that this war on terrorism is not in Afghan homes. So I would be seeking, with a louder voice, more protection for the Afghan civilians for the Afghan homes, for the Afghan women and children."
