Michael Keaton didn't come back because he didn't like the direction the series was going... He was right. Batman Forever kind of showed the lighter side where they had Val Kilmer as Batman. He whined and treated the other cast members rudely, and he even didn't talk to Schumacher for days after he told him to stop being so rude.
