18 size, William Ellery, 11 jewels, hunter case movement made in 1884. Case was gold so somebody scrapped it and I bought the leftovers.

  • @bunnspecial It's sad to think that these watches had survived for more than a century only to be destroyed because of the precious metal content of their cases. I suppose the high price of gold will make gold pocket watches extremely rare in the future and increase the value of the ones that are left. I think it is a crime to destroy these wonderful pieces of art from another time (no pun intended). The same thing is happening here, It's such a shame.

  • @uncled39 I agree and if I had money I would buy them. I did a video with a Hamilton 941 movement that came from a scrapped gold case. If there is a sense of revenge, the person who sold me that movement said that even after selling the movement he lost money because he over estimated the weight of the case.

  • @uncled39 wow, that movement looks very very similar to my size 18 model 1883.

From watching your other videos, it appears that the waltum's hair spring retainer setup is the biggest pain in the ass out of all of them. Is this true?

  • @Polybun Looking at my book the 1870, 1877, 1879 and 1883 look similar. The obvious difference is jewel location and mainspring bridge shape. They are all about the same. Sometimes they don't cooperate and sometimes they do.

  • nice movement, do you think most jewelry shops have movements hanging around? I would like to go to my local jeweler and see if they have any.

  • @ElginPocketwatch If they are buying gold and silver they must have some movements lying around. It doesn't hurt to ask. I figure pawn shops also.

  • @bunnspecial Ill try that, Ill make a vid of my findings if they are any.

  • waltham and elgin both had stems sticking out of their watches, usually 6 and 8 sizes. you shouldn't have a problem finding a case for it, but it all depends on what your willing to spend and being able to size it.
