The final assault on the LTTE terrorists trapped in the Puthukudiyiruppu Northern Lagoon gets underway.
ITN Representative Anura Dorakumbura reporting from the Forward Defence Line of the Security Forces in Puthukudiyiruppu North said operations are progressing to crush the few remaining terrorists in the area. Troops are calling on the terrorists to surrender as further fighting would be futile. The surrendees are assured of security and welfare.
Soldiers said the youngest cadres remain marginalised and do not know where to go. Terrorists who approach with white flags would be accepted irrespective of differences and they would be able to live in amity with the troops. The 9th Gemunu Watch of the 582nd Brigade under the 58th Division commanded by Brigadier Shavendra Silva breached the last defence earth bund of the terrorists in Puthukudiyiruppu.
A soldier said the bund was overrun after two days of fierce fighting. The morale of the troops is high. They are very happy that they have been successful in flushing out the terrorists. Many terrorists were killed yesterday and today. The 9th Gemunu Watch recovered 25 T-56 firearms. 50 terrorists perished yesterday following intense fighting with the 58th Division. 65 T-56 weapons were recovered. The troops destroyed a 130mm artillery gun after the receipt of an intelligence report. The infantry forces recovered the remnants of the destroyed artillery. Task Force Eight under the 53rd Division of Major Gen. Kamal Gunaratne carried out the attack.
